PROJECT 2

The DOer’s Roadmap

An imaginative approach to staff training.

Challenge

Met with the challenge of quickly orienting a team of seasonal instructors and support staff to a unique, specific, and creative curriculum to be delivered within a strict timeline resulting in high-stakes, public-facing outcome, I led the DiscoveryOnstage team in the conceptualization, design, and delivery of a formalized training manual, or learning pathway, The DOer’s Roadmap.

Objective

With culture and collaboration as key differentiators for DiscoveryOnstage and an orientation timeline limited by government employment regulations, it was critical to not only help instructors and staff gain confidence with the curriculum at pace, but also invite their buy-in for the broader organization. In other words, the objective of The DOer’s Roadmap was to provide teachers with a clear curricular and cultural framework so that they’d  feel more free to operate within it creatively. It also aimed to introduce them to DiscoveryOnstage generally and invite them become a part of a story in which both they and their students would be among its protagonists.

Result

The result was a more clear-eyed, enthusiastic, and engaged instructional team and a roster of students expressing, through surveys, improved levels of satisfaction compared to camps past. Employee retention, year-on-year, increased dramatically and final productions, the culmination of the seen-through curriculum, elevated in terms of cohesion and overall artistic quality.
